How private-hire licensing works.

Local councils license private hire in the UK. To carry a passenger for hire and reward legally, an operator needs an operator's licence, each driver needs a private-hire vehicle (PHV) licence from their council, and each vehicle needs to be plated and insured for private hire. Operating without any of the three is a criminal offence.

Before booking any chauffeur company, ask for three pieces of evidence: the operator's licence number (from their local council), the driver's PHV badge number (always visible on their lanyard), and proof of private-hire insurance for the specific vehicle. Every one of those is publicly verifiable. R5 provides all three on request, for every booking.

How to verify a chauffeur company's licence.

Operator's licence
Every legitimate operator has an operator's licence from their local council. Ask for the licence number and issuing council. R5 is licensed by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council under licence OP241726.
Driver's PHV badge
Every driver should be wearing a private-hire badge (usually a visible lanyard) issued by their council. It shows the badge number, expiry date, and photo ID.
Vehicle plate
Every private-hire vehicle must display a PH plate at the rear, issued by the operator's council. Without one, the car cannot legally carry you for hire.
Hire and reward insurance
Standard private motor insurance doesn't cover hire and reward. R5 carries specific private-hire fleet insurance and £10 million public liability cover. Certificates are available on request.
Enhanced DBS check
R5 drivers carry enhanced DBS certificates (child & adult workforce).
Vehicle safety
Every car is MOT-current and holds a council private-hire licence, and we keep the records on file.
